182 Piece Arkansas Mineral Collection at Mystic Caverns - On Display in the Gift Shop - See It for Free!

By mysticcaverns
A few years ago, Mystic Caverns purchased an Arkansas mineral collection from Arkansas Geologist Meredith York. We then hired Eddie Estes to build a custom display case for the collection. The collection now consists of 182 unique Arkansas mineral specimens.

In this collection, we have a variety of Arkansas quartz. Below you will see a quartz cluster and a smokey quartz cluster.

Below are some of the more unusual quartz pieces that we have on display. The haystack quartz is one of the rarest and most beautiful pieces in the collection.

The next two photos include the only piece of Arkansas amethyst that we have....

Below are some examples of Wavelite....

Remember, you can see this collection for free in the gift shop at Mystic Caverns eight miles South of Harrison, Arkansas on Arkansas Scenic Byway 7.

Below, you will see a specimen of Hematite with Turgite on it that has a rainbow of spectacular colors!

One of my favorite minerals is the collection is the piece of dolomite below that looks like toasted coconut. The second one is Chalcopyrite in Calcite on Pink Dolomite.

One of the rarest minerals in the collection is smithsonite. The example below that is completely covered is called "Turkey Fat", and is very rare!

One of the following specimens is from the Mystic Caverns property; it is calcite removed during excavation in 1966 or 1967 while building the man made entrances to the Caverns.

This last example is strange looking and beautiful.

Thanks for taking a look at some of the minerals from our 182 piece collection of Arkansas minerals. We would love for you to stop by during business hours and see the rest of the collection. We are located eight miles South of Harrison, Arkansas and five miles North of the Buffalo National River on Arkansas Scenic Byway 7. For the months of November and December, Mystic Caverns is open from 9 until 4 weather permitting (we close if there is ice or snow on the outside walkways) Monday through Saturday. We are closed on sundays. I attend church at Brand New Church, and the services are available online!
