September 14, 2009 Big crowd turns out for Hillbilly Chili Cook Off LINDA MASTERS Bulletin Online Editor Great weather and great food brought more than 2,500 people to the 14th annual Arkansas State Championship Hillbilly Chili Cook Off Saturday at Bull Shoals-White River State Park.Thousands of people purchased tasting kits and sampled at least 800 gallons of chili, according to Larry Strickert, chief judge.Teams from several states — including Arkansas, Missouri, California and Georgia — vied for the state championship, bragging rights and a trip to compete at the International Chili Society World's Championship Chili Cook Off in October in Charleston, W. Va. The honor went to Bob Hall of Taylorville, Ill., who also recieved a winner's plaque and $500. Other winners were Stuart Frye of Little Rock, second, $300; Karen Shelby of Flippin, third, $200; Jerry Bryant and Barbara Cardillo of Lakeview, People's Choice Award, $100; and Karen Shelby, best-decorated booth, $100.Nine area judges chose the winner from 22 teams who participated in the professional division.The event, sponsored by Bull Shoals-Lakeview Rotary Club, also included live music, vendors and crafters.   Tracey King, a judge at the 14th annual Arkansas State Championship Hillbilly Chili Cook Off at Bull Shoals-White ...
