Fishing Report for Norfork Lake Arkansas near Mountain Home in the Heart of the Ozark Mountains By Blackburns Resort

By BlackBurns Resort
Fishing has been very good on Norfork Lake Lately.  The lake has risien to 560 and has stabilized.  They are generating very little.  The surface temperature is 67 and the Weather has been about 20 degrees below normal which is 73.  It has been cloudy with very little sunshine.  The fish are schooled and roaming and are with the shad.  The wind has blown steadily from the north for several days and the creeks on the south side of the lake are holding most of the fish which are from 21-38 feet.  A Bink's spoon vertically jigged will catch bass, crappie, white bass and stripers.  Crappie are also on Blackburns Brush piles.  www.blackburnsresort.com. The Empire Strikes Back

By HisPlaceResort
Remember the Star Wars movies?  Well, "The Empire Strikes Back" was about as accurate a description of our evening out on the lake as I could come up with.  Yes, your White River Trout Diva got stomped BAD fishing Monday night by her loving husband, Steve.  Not just a little bad...  BIG BAD.  He suggested I let our readers know just HOW BAD.  Therefore, he wears the Darth Vader helmet in this story, because I know how to use Photoshop...  Anyway -- lemme tell you about it... It was Monday night, April 13, 2009...  The White River Trout Diva had been relentlessly ribbing her husband, Steve (aka Darth Vader -- at least in this story...) for several days about how she's been beating him up no matter how they'd been fishing...  More fish...  Bigger fish...  Yes, that "Diva gloating" was fixin' to meet up with a light saber! Lord Vader summoned all the power of the Dark Side of the Force, as he plotted his revenge...  Vader would take the Diva fishing up on Lake Norfork this night.  It was about 6 PM.  The weather was cool, the skies were overcast, with a 15 mph breeze coming through...  The conditions ...

Dry Run Creek project takes prestigious National Award

By HisPlaceResort
Dry Run Creek project takes prestigious national award FRANK WALLIS • Bulletin Staff Writer • December 9, 2010   Dry Run Creek Brown Trout A yearlong project to enhance public access to Dry Run Creek, stabilize the creek's banks and improve fish habitat is the winner of the American Fisheries Society's prestigious Sport Fish Restoration Project of the Year Award for 2010. Tim Burnley, stream habitat coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said he nominated the project. American Fisheries Society representatives from Washington, D.C., are scheduled to present the award at the January meeting of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. "The project had a lot of factors in its favor," Burnley said. "It involved substantial public participation with the Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, state support from the Game and Fish Stream Team, an educational element with the Trout Unlimited Stream Explorer Scouts, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the hatchery and the Army Corps of Engineers. It was a project designed and built for people with mobility impairments." He said advance publicity supporting the effort also was surely an aid in raising the project's profile in the eyes of judges. The $230,000 project ...

The Shad Kill

By fly
Another writer has called the Shad Kill a “pseudo hatch”.  He is right in the sense that it’s not like a caddis or mayfly hatch.  It’s really not a hatch at all but pseudo hatch does sort of describe this event in that it happens almost every year and some times twice in a single year.  Yep!  A lot of folks don’t know that sometimes a shad kill occurs at the end of the summer near or after the labor day holiday weekend.  This~ summer~ shad kill is more rare than the early spring kill which happens just about every year.  Forty two (42 f) degrees fahrenheit seems to be the magic temperature at the surface of the lake which causes the early spring shad kill on Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes.  The summer kill is caused by much warmer temps and I’ve not figured out the magic temps for the summer event but also seems to be helped along with low D.O. (dissolved oxygen) and lake turn over. Shad get pulled through turbines of the dams and into the rivers which causes some very exciting feeding activity.  The trout on these rivers go absolutely berserk and feed voraciously.  This can be seen if the shad come through with ...

Where to Stay in the Ozarks

As mentioned in my White River Trout Fishing blog entry, my Ozark mountain lodging management experience began 17 years ago when my wife and I bought our first resort here in Arkansas.  From that time forward, I have answered the question, "Where should I stay?". Styles of lodging varies as much as the interests of travelers.  The cities of Harrison and Mountain Home both have a variety of chain and privately owned motels.  Resorts on Bull Shoals Lake, Lake Norfork, and the White River have a variety of full service resorts to privately owned houses managed for short term rentals.  Areas surrounding the Buffalo River abound with secluded cabins widely ranging in levels of comfort and amenities.  Therefore, the answer to the question of where to stay in the Ozarks is most frequently followed with my own question, "What do you want to do?".   Another question that the Ozark vacationer should ask themselves is, "Who am i traveling with?".   If traveling with people that do not want to prepare their own food, then know that a secluded cabin may have a long drive to a restaurant.   If  your husband cannot stand to be without internet connection for ...

Winter Arkansas Trout Fishing

As a native Arkansawyer growing up in the Ozarks and an avid fisherman, it was almost required that I become a trout fishing guide.  I complied back in 1992 and served a tour of duty on the White river for over 15 years.  Enjoyed every minute of it by the way.  Met a lot of great people and helped them catch many beautiful Rainbows and Browns using various methods. Guides get asked many questions on a variety of local topics.  One of the most common questions was, "When should I come back to catch a big trout".  Easy answer - February or March.  Winter time is the best time for big trout whether spin or fly fishing.  Why? The White and North Fork rivers are tail waters.  The rivers flow from the bottom of a lake through the bottom of a dam - thus the cold water all year long.  The key to great wintertime fishing is the results of the lakes "turning over".  The cold surface temperature of the lake drops down through the lake - in the process, it sends millions of threadfin shad into shock.  Many of those shad are then sucked through the dams into the ...
