Safety Tips

  • Never hike alone
  • Always bring enough water
  • Know your physical limits - pay attention to posted lengths and difficulty levels
  • Wear appropriate clothing for weather. Make sure clothing is breathable and keeps moisture away from the body.
  • Wear appropriate shoes
  • Carry maps and a compass
  • Have a first aid kit
  • Watch for storms and lightning

Rules for Wilderness Areas

  • Do not go off the trail
  • Pack out trash
  • Do not leave fire rings
  • Never contaminate water sources
  • Follow guidelines for human waste disposal

Remember that hunters share national park and wilderness areas with other hikers
and campers, so be sure to check hunting season calendars before venturing out and
wear bright clothing when appropriate.
