Boat-Eating Tree Part 2
My husband called on my cell phone during the middle of writing group meeting. “Did you give someone permission to use our campground boat ramp?” I replied in the negative. “Well someone's parked a pick-up and boat trailer on the boat ramp."When I arrived home, the owners had just returned. When Mike went down to discuss their lack of permission, he learned they had just sunk their boat upriver on the same sunken tree from last week's disaster. They had hurriedly parked and had been working to retrieve it. Of course, he assured them, that in this type of emergency, they were welcome.Their story was a familiar one around here. They had a trolling motor on their boat; and when they saw they were going to bump the tree, they didn't back off thinking the boat and trolling motor would “bounce off” the brush pile. When it didn't, they found themselves clinging to limbs and looking for a way out. Some kindly neighbors and other boaters assisted them with leaving the river and with raising the boat. (See pictures in Angels Retreat Image Gallery). Fortunately, they wore life jackets. The lesson is obvious, but bears repeating. The boat driver must always be alert. The river moves faster, even at low water, than you assume. Life Jackets are a must.
Don't be the tree's next victim!
